Designing handheld-friendly websites

Greetings! I'm an Opera Software employee and fellow Drupal user/coder and thought I might give you a couple of tips:

1) The newly launched Dev.Opera includes a section about designing pages with mobile phones in mind: http://dev.opera.com/articles/mobile/. The site just launched last week, so more articles should appear over time.

2) The problems you're seeing may be with your browser. So, you'll probably want to give Opera Mini a try. It's a free download. There are some tips for installing it at http://my.opera.com/Words/blog/show.dml/.... You can download a beta of Opera Mini 3.0 at http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/ope... or Opera Mini 2.0 at http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/ope.... The phone support page doesn't say that the Treo 700p is supported, but users in the forums appear to be using it, so it's worth a try.

3) FWIW, Jorunn D. Newth (one of the authors of that A List Apart article) is an Opera Software employee.

Thanks for posting the links!

I tried installing Opera last night from my Palm, and I have to say it was not easy. I ended up needing to do it from my desktop. Once installed, I went off and tried browsing, but Opera would not load -- apparently I need IBM's WebSphere Micro Environment IBM Java VM to be installed. The error does not provide a link or explanation. A link would have been very cool. I will have to track down that thing and see what happens then.

Eep! I'll let the Opera Mini folks know to include information about the IBM JVM. I'm sorry that you had so much trouble. IIRC, the blog post I linked to included information about the necessary JVM. Unfortunately, the blog appears to be down at the moment, so I can't verify.

Here is where I found it. It seems to work on Palm 700p, though it's not listed on the page as being supported. It's a 2005 release, so I'm not sure if it's current.
